Vickie Byron

Inspired by commuter views of Brooklyn and Queens, I paint the city's geometric understructures, its subways, bridges, and cemeteries in an expression of New NYC’s culture and social history. My paintings’ filmstrip-like frames and fast moving compositions capture the visual speed and repeating rhythms of the city. I lay down tracks in my compositions, depicting openings and barriers that frame the city, splitting it into regular intervals that mark progression through time.

Depictions of movement, empty neighborhoods, severed hands, classical and industrial architecture, and wordplay combine to portray time, transition, and isolation, documenting a 21st century city in flux.
