Sones Afro-Mestizos de Guerrero

A dance performance and workshop

This dance is inspired by the colors, textures and rhythms from the coastal state of Guerrero including African, mestizo and South American influences. The sones or rhythms de artesa (a small wooden platform) reflect dancers balance and intricate footwork influenced by African immigrants to Mexico.

Helaine Soller paintings reveal intimate views of water environments creating awareness of our fragile ecosystems through colorful and expressive compositions, capturing nature at a moment in time. Soller's art is in the permanent collection of The Library of Congress, the Archives of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

 

LIC Waterfront Photo Tour

MEET UP: Gantries, Center Boulevard and 50th Avenue for a walking tour of the Long Island City waterfront.

 

The tour begins and ends under the Gantries, with visits to the piers, playgrounds and gardens from the northern edge of Gantry Plaza State Park to Water Taxi Beach. Near #7 train to Vernon Jackson. Bring a camera or camera phone.

 

Cost: $30 for kids $40 for adults
