Olena Jennings
I translate my original poetry into textile art. I start with fabric, often vintage fabric. I sew clothing items that I embellish with embroidery, natural dye, and photo transfer medium. I often use old family photos that portray Ukrainian culture and the immigrant experience. I sometimes incorporate Ukrainian traditions, through language and cultural rituals. For example, in my latest project I focus on the Ukrainian Christmas Eve tradition of preparing twelve dishes, echoing its place settings and recipes.
