Artist Bio:
Sheila Ross was born in Canada, is married to a Turk and recently became a naturalized American citizen. While she has deep ties to those aforementioned countries, she has lived in New York city since 1995. She has a BFA from the University of Western Ontario and an MFA from New York University. Her work has been included in solo and group exhibitions in Canada and the US at Dam Stulhtrager gallery, Socrates Sculpture Park, Islip Art Museum, Workspace and Aljira. Ross also collaborates with another Canadian artist on Yurt City, an ongoing collaborative installation project conceived of in 2006. Since that time more than 10 iterations have been conceived and exhibited in venues in New York State, including at art sites gallery in Riverhead in 2009 and 2010 and as part of several International traveling exhibitions in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, Fresno, CA and Memphis, TN. Sheila is a member of Studio 41, a 4 year old artist collective based in LIC Queens.
Initially trained as a painter, Ross has also been engaged in making sculpture and installations for more than three decades. She began seriously working in clay in 2012, shortly after returning to making two dimensional work in paint and related media. Often similar and unifying iconography and motifs appear in all the forms in which Ross works. She lives and works in Queens with her Turkish American husband. In addition to her art practice she is also an arts educator, arts administrator and art consultant.
