Artist Statement:
In my work I explore themes of identity and community. Using simple shapes my explorations consider how things/people relate to each other. I (and probably most other humans) can feel like the life of the party one minute and the third wheel the next and I look to investigate these emotions. I am inspired by the arranging and combining of shapes to form a composition just as people assemble, or don’t, into groups. My abstract groupings then resemble something known or appear as something new. Using smaller sizes for my imagery I look to create a sense of intimacy between the viewer and the work.
The methods and processes of making art continually inspire, motivate and challenge me. The many and varied techniques of printmaking work with me to create an image with the best expression of the vision whether it be in the plate tone of an etching, the textures of wood grain in a woodcut, or the contrast of black and white I can get in a lithograph. Sometimes the process itself reveals an image to me. Lastly, printmaking gives a little gift at the end of the all its process: running the prepared plate/block through the press in the final step adds a little bit of magic in the reveal of the completed work.
