Artist Bio:
Jing Xu is a Swedish-Chinese painter and actor based in Long Island City, New York. She holds an MFA in Acting from the American Repertory Theater Institute at Harvard and a BA from Brown University, with additional study at the Art Students League of New York. Her abstract paintings explore mark, form, and presence, and she also has a live portrait series I SEE WRITERS featuring writers and artists in NYC.
Artist Statement:
I came to making paintings as a way of finding rootedness in a transient life. Through exploring color and shapes, I search for moments of simultaneous exuberance and clarity - the sort of moment where we feel ourselves to be both intimately knowable and and vastly infinite. Also drawing from my background in movement and performance, I often use elements of geometric abstraction and calligraphy to create compositions that convey a sense of motion and possibility. With each painting, I invite humor, introspection, tenderness and a sense of discovery, unearthing moments of both vulnerability and strength, intimacy and expansiveness.
