Artist Bio:

My name is Jemina Vita, and I am a mixed media artist and designer based in Long Island City, New York. Born in Jackson Heights, Queens, I have spent years honing my craft, starting with my membership at the Art Student’s League and culminating in a BFA from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 2017.

In my work, I explore the tension between confinement and aspiration, reflecting on our intrinsic desire for freedom within systemic constraints. Utilizing textiles, fabric, wire, sound, and more, I focus on upcycling fibrous and non-fiber materials into pieces that symbolize our need for protection and empowerment. My creations serve as a form of ephemeral armor, aiming to nurture resilience and identity in a world increasingly shaped by technological advancements.

The timeless and grounding nature of my styles activates themes of the past, present, and future, celebrating our journeys of survival. I confront the growing divide in society, amplified by the rapid digital age, and its uncertain impact on our relationships and connections. My art rejects despair; instead, it embraces hope and shared imagination, inviting viewers to reflect on the futures we can build together.

Artist Statement:

Ultimately, my work challenges us to navigate the complexities of aspiration amidst systemic limitations while fostering a sense of community and connection.Artist StatementMy work delves into the complex relationship between confinement and aspiration, investigating our innate desire for freedom amidst systemic control. I depict personal agency as an ongoing negotiation, shaped by the limitations that our environment imposes on us. Through my art, I present a visual commentary on wealth, emphasizing the growing divide in society, a divide intensified by technological advancements and the rise of artificial intelligence.

Despite these observations, my work remains rooted in a sense of hope. It illustrates the idea that aspiration can flourish not only in the absence of constraints but often thrives because of them. In this context, resilience manifests as an active force: imaginative, collective, and quietly radical. This perspective recognizes that challenges can inspire creativity and foster solidarity among individuals seeking change.

Light plays a crucial role in my work, acting as a metaphor for the intricate relationship between struggle and hope. It captures the essence of both concepts, illustrating that they coexist without providing a clear resolution. My art prompts viewers to reflect on the complexities of human experience and the ways we navigate our aspirations in the face of adversity.

Ultimately, my work poses important questions about the futures we can envision and create together. It challenges us to consider whether we will inherit the inequitable systems around us or actively work to dismantle them. This viewpoint serves as an invitation to engage with the possibilities of our collective imagination, to resist complacency, and to seek genuine connections with one another. It encourages viewers not just to dream but to take meaningful action towards a more equitable world but where individual and collective aspirations can coexist and flourish in the face of systemic challenges.
