Artist Bio:
Brooklyn-based American artist and designer Ely Young (b. 1996, Orlando, Florida) has a background in interior architecture and design, bringing over six years of professional experience into her evolving artistic trajectory.
A graduate of Florida State University with a B.S. in Interior Architecture and Design (2019), Young channels her understanding of spatial construction and material sensibility into a painterly language that is at once structured and intuitive. Her work is marked by a compelling awareness of surface, rhythm, and the physicality of the image, where the human figure becomes both subject and structure. Her work often explores themes of spirituality, duality, the self and the subconscious and emanates from a necessity for honesty and vulnerability. Some of her favorite artists include Hilma Af Klint, Kati Heck, Christina Quarles, Joan Miro and Hannah Hoch.
Artist Statement:
Ely Young is preoccupied with the personal value inherent in psychic individuation and even more so, the invaluable nature of transpersonal or archetypal redemption. She is in constant dialogue with symbols in everyday life and believes in their profound power to be opportunities for self-reflection, and connection to collective humanity in the past, present and future. The task of individuation inevitably knocks at each of our doors. If we are privileged enough to answer, will we go into the depths? Give attention to the wound? Discern our own heaven and hell? She paints to talk to herself, and mirror the tangled and static parts of ourselves begging to be untangled and expressed. She combines dream-analysis, psychic mapping, queer and feminist references, somatic experiencing and other intentionally consumed influences to build compositions that settle and stir.
