Artist Statement:
I am working on my NYC Faces in Motion, an interdisciplinary project expanding upon my watercolor portrait series, NYC Faces. These larger-than-life paintings capture subway riders — strangers of all backgrounds who share the public space. I chose a bright color palette. I expanded the series from the train to other venues and images, including bridges and bicycles, iconic symbols of living together, sharing the public space. This body of work transcends and continues to grow in different forms and multimedia. The new multi-sensory art series transforms the original paintings into an immersive AR experience. Accompanying the paintings are hand drawn pastels on New York Times newsprint that highlight objects carried by subway riders; Environmental sounds of raindrops on nylon, music through earbuds, and pages turning, are linked by QR codes for viewers to see videos on my YouTube, @clarestokolosa/shorts and invite comments.
