Ellen Day
My work expresses my own self-discovery as an African-American woman. I present myself to the world and am classified by my outer appearance even though I hope to be perceived by my inner self. I work with square tubular interwoven units as a metaphor of a crumbling outside façade. Once opened, an inner sanctum is revealed which is represented by curved units which reflect my internal struggle of the sensitive person, rarely seen, that lives within the outside façade. The integration of these two separate, distinctive roles are now emerging, one defined by society, and one defined by myself.
