Delectable, a solo show of recent works by Ann Cofta, is a playful exploration of images that conjure up comfort in a burst of textures and flavors. The exhibit, curated by Raluca Anchidin, is cheeky and nostalgic. Aubergine Café is the perfect setting for these depictions of oversized cakes and pies, nestled alongside salt and pepper shakers. Sweet, salty and spicy come together to create a gratifying mix. Also in the exhibit are colorful retro matchbooks, a reference to the ubiquitous souvenirs once offered to customers at eating establishments. Cofta, a resident of Woodside for over twenty years, is primarily a textile artist whose work combines sewing, printmaking, embroidery and quilting techniques. Her art focuses on exploring relationships between objects, time and memory. She often uses everyday subjects, things that are familiar, but overlooked. Here they are depicted in playful ways, in some instances their scale so absurdly large as to make them
impossible to ignore. The significance of human touch is evident in the delicate hand stitching of these distinctive textile constructions. Cofta has had seven solo shows in New York City and has been in numerous juried group exhibits nationally. She has been awarded several residencies, including one this fall with Art Crawl Harlem on Governors Island. There she will be working on a large-
scale, interactive cityscape this coming September and October.
Opening: May 17th 4 - 6pm
Exhibition runs through August 25th
