Andrew Wheatley

I work in collage because of its unique ability to call on visual signifiers to convey a message. Using disparate found objects and symbols loaded with meaning, my work recontextualizes these elements and gives them a new life and a new message. Rather than dictating directly to audiences, my work is in conversation with the viewer, allowing them to parse the meaning and the possible stories captured within the image. I want viewers of my work to interrogate what each element means individually, and work out new meanings, narratives, and stories when they are viewed as a whole, together. I often work around themes based on contemporary news events and issues, literature, and pop culture.
