Alacia Stubbs

I have two visual obsessions: the Queens "urbanscape," and nature. I have painted store windows and the views over Queens from elevated subway stations. But my chief urban interest is the little 1920s bungalows whose exterior walls are clad in vividly colored geometrically patterned shingles, the like of which I have never seen anywhere else. I love to depict these little bungalows with their colorful shingles and their tiny front yards filled with scruffy grass and shrubs planted smack against the foundation. My other theme is nature experienced both through my houseplants and in Alley Pond Park. I do not depict the Park's vistas in the grandiose manner of Bierstadt. Instead, I select my favorite locations within the Park and depict their quiet beauty.
