Michelle Wey

I think about the value of the handmade object, that which requires times, like the craft of painting, in our age of overwhelming technological advancement. The tactile and the tangible amidst a barrage of virtual images and special effects; the development of personal style in the face of mass-produced everything – from images to ideas. If I dare to state a manifesto of sorts, it is the assertion that originality and beauty matter in a post postmodern world. I hope that my paintings, while faithful to aesthetic values and the craft of painting, can also serve as a tonic to our intellectual and media-fed need to label, identify and define. My paintings are a vision of an imaginary future which is recognizable yet indefinable, and inherently organic.
