Michelle Wey

Michelle Wey paints in the space between abstraction and representation where they can develop an anachronistic personal/universal language of forms, greatly influenced by Mexican surrealism, but with an approach in which they derive the surreal quality more from the abstract than the realistic elements of the painting. Michelle thinks often about the value of the handmade object which requires time, like the craft of painting, in our age of overwhelming technological advancement. Michelle paints with the hope that the imaginary images that take form in their sketchbook or on their canvas will emanate a universality that can communicate across the breadth of the infinitely diverse social, cultural, racial and ethnic spectrum of our shared humanity
