Artist Bio:
Tommaso Nicolao was born in Bologna, Italy, in 1976. After graduating from art school in Venice and Milan, he moved to New York City to work as an illustrator and graphic designer. Over the years he has maintained a dual artistic practice as an art director and figurative painter, showing both in Europe and the US (PLATO Gallery, New York - A-Space, New York - LICA, New York - La Fenice Gallery, Venice - GPS Art Factory, Venice - Galerie Catherine et André HUG, Paris - PS 35 Gallery, New York - 52nd Salon d’Art Contemporain, Montrouge - Galerie Edgar, Paris - Galerie Le Tracteur, Paris). He lives and works in New York City.
Artist Statement:
My work aims to leverage the contrasts between classical and contemporary, spiritual and materialistic. While my art training in Italy shaped my classical technique and aesthetic, my work as an art director in the luxury industry informed my understanding of contemporary visual communication. The narrative aspect in some of my works relates to concepts of disappearance and abandonment. We feel references to the classical Masters, but the original subjects have all but vanished, leaving behind an empty shell of accessories in which the living element is no longer part of the conversation.
