Artist Bio:
Chloe Cheng Cao, an emerging artist who graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Columbus College of Art & Design in 2024, currently resides in New York. Rooted in the rich cultural heritage of China, her upbringing infuses her work with a depth that transcends geographical boundaries, further enriched by her experiences within the academic and societal contexts of the United States. Her practice explores the intricate connections between nature, memory, and human experience through layered mark-making and mixed media.
Artist Statement:
Chloe Cheng Cao uses delicate strokes of pencil, colored pencil, and charcoal on paper, canvas, and transparent materials to explore the subtle and deep connections between nature and living beings. Her work crosses cultural and language boundaries, revealing an interconnected world of ecology.
She focuses on the habits of plants and animals and the marks they leave on their surroundings, expressing a universal experience of life — one of essence, resonance, and reflection. By layering dots, lines, and planes, Cao builds rich, textured spaces that abstractly capture the movements and changes found in nature.
Her approach not only helps viewers feel a stronger emotional connection to the natural world but also invites them on an introspective journey, where they can experience the peace and harmony that nature offers. Through layers of marks and translucent materials, Cao breaks down the traditional boundary between viewer and artwork, creating a space that blends memory, observation, and her research into natural phenomena.
