Suzi Evalenko

I have been painting since 1973. I have had eight solo exhibitions in New York and been included in many juried group shows. I am represented by First Street Gallery in NY. My work is in private collections in the U.S., Europe and South America. My primary media are oil, charcoal, pencil, and mixed media. As a figurative and portrait painter, direct observation is my source of inspiration. But, I am not interested in replication of reality. At the heart of every painting I make, is a common quest: a search for the temperament that makes the subject unique and at the same time emblematic. And every subject is infused with personal connotation, emotional content and vitality, be it a person, a still life, or a re-envisioned extract from the real world.  Compositions often meld reality and abstract elements - ephemeral shadows take solid form, objects refuse to honor the niceties of background and foreground, challenging the notion of stillness and disregarding the limitations of two-dimensional space. My work is impressionistic and rich in color.
