Sheila Ross
In order to convey my own concepts of masculinity and beauty, my work presents a dichotomy between intimidating Canadian (born) and naturalized US citizen, Sheila Ross has lived in NYC since 1995. Her work has been included in solo and group exhibitions in Canada and the US at Dam Stulhtrager gallery, Socrates Sculpture Park, Islip Art Museum, Workspace and Aljira. Since 2006 Ross has collaborated with another Canadian artist on Yurt City, which has been installed in more than 8 venues, including at art sites gallery in Riverhead and as part of International traveling exhibitions in Rotterdam, Memphis and Fresno. Initially trained as a painter, Ross has been making sculpture for 25 years. About 5 years ago, not long after returning to painting, she also resumed working in clay. The unifying elements in all of Ross' forms are the various iconography/motifs of bricks, clouds, birds and spider webs.
