Statements from Drawings in a Time of Social Distancing...

Bedroom Studio 2020

Artist: Marie Roberts Medium: Graphite on paper Dimensions: 48" x 34" Price: $350 Summing up working in quarantine.

My family spoke carney, I ran away from their sideshow traditions to become a painter. Painting sideshow banners for the not for profit arts center Coney Island USA brought an epiphany: I found a medium where the two halves of my life - the carney and the painter - could mingle and make art. Drawing is essential to my life. I draw everywhere, from observation and from invention. To me it is the original magic - simple materials can do so much. To paraphrase Giacometti, I can't draw, that's why I do it every day.
