Nicki Koning
My paintings start from photo references and slowly become other things through melding and blurring forms and blending colors. I'm interested in turning forms into emblems and symbols. I often start with something that looks three dimensional and then decompose it into something flat.
By painting from photos of crowds, social commentary about distraction and detachment happens. I paint technology like screens, or things that are fashionable or commonly observed in crowds in higher detail.
The process of changing a photo into a painted form is like a translating from one mode of experience to another. My paintings are about ways of perceiving, how these are affected by flatness, screens, and fractured attention, and being present with technology and distraction.
