Heather Abshire

I use my work to better understand and share my anxieties. I've struggled with anxiety most of my life and creating art became an escape, but also a tool to help regain control. When I extract and combined elements of this chaotic world, I can control the environment presented to the audience. My pieces mimic a dream-like state with endless possibilities of where and when. I distort my subject matter to a point where moments are identifiable but the reality is questionable. By playing with complementary colors, juxtaposition and perspective I create tension along with balance within the composition. For me, each piece is a search to make fragmentary parts of this world connect and establish something new. Either through collage or painting, the work challenges the viewer's percept
