While living in her native country, Indonesia, during 1994, Ellya started to paint using oil. In 1997, Ellya came to New York to enroll in the Fine Arts program at F.I.T. and earned BFA.
The abstract images are painted without conscious thought or a plan. The shapes appear as I go along painting the negative area until the positive image appears accidentally, as if I am searching for something to better myself as a person or to search through beautiful moments in doing day to day tasks in my everyday life. Occasionally, I add the positive shapes to create balance to the overall image. Just like in real life, things can happen unexpectedly but I must work on something to achieve what I want in life. This is very much of how I came to be of who I am today.
