While growing up in Michigan Paul had an interest in art and biology from an early age. He attended Bucknell University where he received a BA in Animal Behavior and a minor in Studio Art. After moving back to Michigan and showing his work in group shows in Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Lansing, Paul moved to New York. He now lives and works in Queens. Since moving to New York Paul's emphasis has changed from building pinhole cameras and photography to small scale sculpture based on the structures built by social insects. This series of sculptures is titled Apis habilis, which combines the genus name for honey bees (Apis mellifera), with the species name for the first species of hominids (Homo habilis). The title translates to tool using bee, and suggests the pieces are artifacts from an unknown species of bee.
